Dr. Beverly I am 45 years old, worked the same job as an office manager for 10 years (just quit), have 4 kids at home still, and a husband with emphysema, I have no idea where to begin to figure out what to do, I thought I wanted to be home with the kids, but that does not give me any rewards, just the pain of them wanting more than we have, I have no energy and right before i quit my job i was being treated for depression now what??

Dear K:

Sometimes we make a decision that does not solve a problem or in the process it creates other problems. However, no decision is cast in concrete!

The Yin: Step back and give yourself time to look at these things you believe:
· Interest you
· Would make you feel happier
· Create joy when you imagine doing them

Write down everything that enters your mind. Do this several times over a few weeks. Then sit down in a quiet place and consider everything you have been journaling. There may be some new thoughts that will lead you to a creative idea for work or you may discover a different combination of work and being with 4 children at home that will provide more happiness than your present life.

The Yang: We often find our richer self when life seems to be at its most painful place. These times become an opportunity to make a difference. Take one very small step at a time and then another. Small steps are all you need in creating your new, less depressed road. There are occupational guides that can be contacted to help you find your direction. A book that might be helpful is, “What Color Is My Parachute?”.
